In a world that’s been forced to disconnect, how does a community stay together? Northeastern students, faculty and staff describe some of the creative ways they are reconnecting with each other during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Class of 2019 is graduating into a world continuously being reshaped by rapidly advancing technology. And with the skills, knowledge, and agility that have been acquired through their experiences at Northeastern, this year’s graduates are well prepared to evolve along with it, President Joseph E. Driverless cars are hitting the road, powered by artificial intelligence; robots can climb stairs, open doors, win Jeopardy, analyse stocks, work in factories, find parking spaces and advise oncologists. In the past, automation was considered a threat to low-skilled labour. Now, many high-skilled functions, including interpreting medical images, doing legal research, and analysing data, are within the skill sets of machines. How can higher education prepare students for their professional lives when professions themselves are disappearing?

President Aoun signed the agreement—the most comprehensive academic initiative by an American institution in Cuba—last week during a visit to Cuba, where he led a delegation of Northeastern faculty and staff and members of Congress. Students, faculty and staff filled the Curry Student Center Ballroom for “A Tribute to the Dream,” an annual celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event featured musical performances and remarks from President Joseph E. Aoun and special guest Yoruba Richen, filmmaker and director of the documentary, “The New Black.”

Every year the North­eastern com­mu­nity gathers for a Vet­erans Day cer­e­mony to honor all who have served in the U.S. mil­i­tary, espe­cially North­eastern stu­dents and alumni.

The annual Vet­erans Day cer­e­mony is held at the North­eastern Uni­ver­sity Vet­erans Memo­rial located on the Neal Finnegan Plaza adja­cent to the Egan Research Center. The memo­rial bears the names of the men and women from North­eastern who gave their lives serving in the military.

President Joseph E. Aoun and the Board of Trustees host faculty, students, staff and alumni during the official naming ceremony of the new D’Amore-McKim School of Business, formerly the College of Business Administration, in Blackman Auditorium. Northeastern alumni Richard D’Amore, BA’76, and Alan McKim, MBA’88, joined forces to make the largest philanthropic investment in the university’s history.
