Faculty and Staff Colleagues:

Tomorrow we will announce the appointment of Steven Kadish to the newly created position of Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. I wanted to let you know in advance.

As a member of the senior leadership team, Steve will help with strategic planning and innovation initiatives across a range of critical university functions. He will directly oversee the existing departments of Facilities, Human Resources Management, and Business Services. He will also share management of Information Services with the Provost. Steve will also manage an office of real estate planning and development, and integrate the critical functions of public safety, risk management and environmental health and safety.

Steve brings tremendous experience to this new opportunity. He comes to Northeastern from Dartmouth College, where he has served as Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer. Prior to this appointment, Steve was Director of Global Health Equity at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and the Undersecretary of the state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services. He has also held senior positions at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Steve earned his undergraduate degree from Tufts University where he majored in political science and French. He also holds a master’s degree in city planning from MIT. He has been active in many civic and community organizations, with particular emphasis on health and related issues.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank Jack McCarthy, who has overseen many of these functions over the past five years. His skillful leadership during a time of financial challenge for all institutions has been invaluable. Because of Jack, we are a stronger university today than we were when he arrived. Jack will transition to a part-time position as Senior Advisor to the President, where he will continue to work closely with me on a broad range of critical issues.

The external announcement will be distributed tomorrow morning. Steve Kadish will join the university in the early fall; please join me in welcoming him to Northeastern.
