I’m pleased to inform you of a significant honor that has been bestowed on Professor Hortensia Amaro, associate dean of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and director of Northeastern’s Institute on Urban Health Research.

Professor Amaro has just been elected a member of the Institute of Medicine, one of the world’s preeminent health organizations. An arm of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute is one of the most highly regarded research organizations in the world, and provides valuable guidance to policymakers and the private sector on the nation’s most pressing health and health care challenges.

Membership in the Institute of Medicine is a prestigious achievement in the fields of health and medicine; Professor Amaro’s election is a rare honor. It recognizes her national leadership in pioneering new treatments for substance abuse, mental illness, trauma, and HIV/AIDS. It also underscores her deep dedication to addressing the needs of society’s most vulnerable populations, especially women and children living in poverty.

In a year that already has been marked by many successes for our research enterprise, Professor Amaro’s election to the Institute of Medicine stands out as a special accomplishment. It is a powerful validation of Northeastern’s commitment to producing use-inspired research that responds to the national imperatives of health, security, and sustainability, and is the latest sign of the impact we are making as a global research university.

Please join me in congratulating Professor Amaro on her outstanding achievement.
