To the Northeastern Community:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of John H. McCarthy as Northeastern’s Senior Vice President of Administration and Finance. Jack comes to us from Harvard University’s Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations, where he is a Principal and lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government.

In his new role, Jack will oversee the finance, facilities, information systems, public safety and human resources management functions for the university. He will also facilitate the university’s institutional audit, compliance and risk management program. He will play a critical role in the process of developing and implementing the university’s next master plan.

Jack’s professional experience makes him exceptionally well qualified to be Senior Vice President. He joined the faculty at Harvard following thirty-seven years as a practicing CPA with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he led the U.S. Education and Nonprofit Practice from 1998 to 2004. His client list included some forty leading U.S. universities, including Northeastern. Jack has deep expertise in business, financial reporting, governance and technical issues for the education and not-for-profit sectors. He has written extensively on these and other topics.

Jack’s professional affiliations have included serving as the President of the Massachusetts Society of CPAs and as a two-term member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) governing council. He also served on the AICPA Expert Panel for Nonprofit Organizations. While a member of the National Association of College & University Business Officers (NACUBO) he served as a professional advisor to the Accounting Principles Council.

As a volunteer, Jack is very involved in greater Boston. He received wide acclaim for leading the Financial Transparency Project for the Archdiocese of Boston in 2006. He is a member of the Finance Council of the Archdiocese of Boston and a Knight of Malta and he serves as a trustee or director for Boston College High School, Catholic Charities of Boston and the Pine Street Inn. Jack holds a B.S. in Accounting from Boston College and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.

Jack begins his work today. Please join me in welcoming him to the Northeastern community.
